A casing hanger is a device that runs casing into the wellbore during the drilling phase of an oil and gas well. There are two main types of casing hangers: slip and mandrel. The slip type is the most commonly used, it is installed around the casing after the casing has been run in, and it can also be installed before or after the casing is cemented. The mandrel hanger is screwed into the casing, providing good well control while hanging the hanger and improving annulus tightness.
Both hangers can transfer tens of thousands of pounds of casing weight from the rig mast to the load shoulder of the casing head or spool. Casing hangers perform the following functions:
1. Suspend the sleeve load
2. Place the casing in the center of the head
3. provide a primary seal inside the casing head to isolate casing annular pressure from the upper wellhead assembly
4. Allow test connections
